According to Adam Schefter our Lions have signed former Niner, Bengal and most recently Viking Safety Taylor Mays. This fills the recently freed up roster spot with the cutting of Bill Bentley.
Apparently, the vikings Signed Mays this off season and didn't like what they saw in three months of off season action, so they cut him and we signed him.
This seems like an odd signing. Mays is basically a LB/S hybrid. The Lions, as a team, are deepest at those positions. If Mays is going to find a spot on the Lions 53 man roster, he will make it as a special team stud
I don't like keeping vet's just for ST's. Why couldn't we find a spot for Jerome Ellsworth Couplin III ?
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of using ST spots on vets either but this is what conservative coaches do. They want experienced players for at least some of the ST roles. As long as there is a balance with enough young talent thrown in, I am ok with it for a couple spots.
Deletethe Lions FO has been doing this for years if you consider wending, osgood, and the other guy just like osgood
DeleteI'm concerned it bumps a guy like couphlin off the roster but then again couphlin hasn't proven to be anything yet
so johnson gets bumped? but people have written great reports on his potential
well. someone is getting bumped if he stays. That is a big if at this point but it is still possible. Hopefully it is not a young guy.
DeleteThe problem as the Lions have are young guys behind Quinn and Debo. One issue with always being in a win now frame of mind is that rookies and young guys do not get much of a chance to play or stick around.
DeleteCasting players aside for one reason or the other sometimes can come back and bite you on the ass. I am betting that Mayhew/coaching staff would have like to bringing back Chris Houston or even Jonte Green back rather than Mays.
Just a "hyped up" college player. Never made any kind of impact so far in his career. Struggled in SF, had one solid game in Cincy. Really did not standout as a special teamer. Not seeing Taylor sticking around.
ReplyDeletea hyped USC player that didn't work out? Say it isn't so!
DeleteDoes Austin think he knows Mays better than Zimmer? If he makes something out of him at Safety then Austin is a lock for an HC position next year. With Ngata and now Mays in a Hybrid LB position could we see a 3-4 defense in certain situation?
ReplyDeleteIt is inevitable that we will see more, if not a lot more, 3-4 looks. The Lions have too at this point. We just don't have the horses at DT anymore to expect them to be able to provide the middle rush we had the last couple years. We are going to have to adjust and vary our looks based on situation, surprise and tactics. If we don't, we are not going to have a top 10 defense this season. If we don't have a top 10 scoring defense this year, the running game they want to push more won't be viable because we will be behind too much forcing us to throw more.
