Why haven't we heard news about Johnson's retirement yet?

The season ticket renewal deadline is Feb 24th (tomorrow). Which Lions team is more likely to get people to renew? The Detroit Lions with Megatron or the Detroit Lions without Megatron?

Would it surprise you? The Lions pulling that kind of shit?

It wouldn't surprise me, not with Rod "blood from a turnip" Wood running the show. That is what I don't like about him. The guy has the stink of snake oil sales man. The kind of guy you couldn't turn your back on for fear he might steal your wallet. Not for the id and credit cards, those can be tracked, but for the hard cash and then hand you your wallet as if he found it on the ground.

In case you were wondering, I am not liking this hire at all. He will make more money for the Fords and that is his job. I have zero belief he will keep his nose out of the football side of things. Even if he truly wanted too, he just won't be able to. Too much money goes into that side of things and every dime that goes that way will be coming out of the hands of the Fords.

  1. I'd personally rather see the version of the Lions without Calvin, a better oline & some more defensive pieces in place.

    1. Me too. Thinking on that, the bills LT is the guy I have been looking at recently. He is young, 26 I believe, and is a clear upgrade over Reiff who we could then move over to RT. One more that would upgrade one position (LT) and dramatically upgrade another (RT). I really like it.

    2. I don't see us being able to get him. A lot of teams with a lot more money than us, though 30Mill(maybe 40 depending on CJ) is a sizable sum. He's the big fish, if the Bills even let him get away, he'll get overpaid for sure. There are more reasonable options such as Kelvin Beachum, really good LT himself but he'll likely be had at a discount because of his injury last season. We could go with Mitchell Schwartz as a RT option. I personally don't think Reiff absolutely must be moved. Both of those guys are young options and depending on how the board falls we could go oline round 1. That said I'm on board for defense in round 1 for at least the next five years. I believe you've been on that for a while. Well, I'm buying. Whatever Quinn does...just don't take a WR. We need 1 but we can find value just like we did with Tate. Matthew has me convinced he's ready for this challenge.

    3. I thought about him probably being overpaid too but with the way the salary cap is rising and the way LTs are being paid, an over pay now will probably be a fair deal in a year or two. Add that in with the upgrade at two positions, his youth, lack of injuries and it just makes too much sense. If Quinn is any sort of competent GM he is going to at least put out feelers for his services. But yes, at some point the cost will outweigh the benefit and that does have to be measured.

I thought about Beachum too but that injury was no joke. How often do we hear about LT blowing out their ACLs? It seems like it doesn't happen often. How will he heal from it? He is young and that works in his favor. For the right price I could see it.

Schwartz, why does that name make my skin crawl? Some repressed memory I guess. I could go along with a move to bring him in too. He won't be cheap but he wont be LT expensive either. Balancing your spending left to right on your tackles seems like a good plan to me as long as your coaches are able to recognize and implement schemes that will help one or the other depending on matchups.

Since we drafted Matt, I have been on the "build the trenches" line of thinking. The Big uglies win games second only to the QB and that might not be being fair to the big uglies. Mayillen actually did a decent job (yes, I said it) of building the D line but he failed miserably keeping his work together (ahhh, i feel better). It took him way too long to start putting real resources into the O line and I think those two factors were his ultimate undoing here. Pissing away resources on weapons for his QB while ignoring the reality that QBs need time to find those weapons.

The truly sad part of it all. We basically need to completely rebuild our D line save Ziggy and our O line needs some heavy lifting too.

I too am not ready to draft another bauble in the first or second round. With the way CBs are getting bigger and bigger, I think we need to find some smaller quicker WRs that can juke their way to free space. You can find guys like that in the middle to later rounds. Then we just have to teach Matt to aim a little lower. That is probably easier said than done.

I hope you are right about Matt. The longer he is here without winning anything, the heavier the weight will be on his shoulders, just ask CJ.

    4. Oh yes, I am also do not think Reiff has to be moved. He is consistent and reliable. I would rate him as an average to above average LT. Kind of reminds me of Backus and I always liked him. Well, except when he faced Jared Allen. Allen seemingly always took his lunch money. Fucker.

    5. "Mayillen" did a good job?!?!?!? Like...on anything?!?!? Are you more reasonable over here or are you just grateful for company & trying not to piss/run me off lmao

    6. lol, I know. I felt sick typing that sentence until I got a dig on him at the end of it. That said, he did do a pretty good job on the D line but that as more of a product of multiple high draft picks all put into one position than his skill. He was better than Millen at using high first round picks. At one point Suh and Fairley looked to be the most dominate interior DT combo in the league. Of course, that didn't really work out so well for us in the long run and that exodus of talent from the d line was his fault too.

The sun shine on every dogs ass once in a while.

And yes, I am also very grateful for the conversation :D

    7. I just read a report that Schwartz is looking for something closer to if not actually LT money. I don't see the Lions doing that but someone is going to give it too him.

  2. He's an interesting case...I wonder if people with much more insight than myself actually think he can be a really good LT. He's been in a unique situation playing across from Joe Thomas. He could have the skills for it but when the clear cut best in the game already occupies the spot...tough shit. If he doesn't have LT stuff there's also the issue of what exactly a RT is worth these days? Von Miller, JJ Watt, Khalil Mack, Justin Houston, more & more rushers are popping up on that side. Their value could be seeing a rise.

    1. It is clear he thinks of himself that way. Playing opposite the best LT in the league would give me something to measure himself against and also someone, from whom, to learn the right way to do it.

It is only a matter of time before RTs are being paid close to if not the same amount as LTs. The beast pass rushers move around so much trying to cause confusion and create mismatches, pay equality on each side seems inevitable.

You have me wondering, would he be an upgrade over Reiff on the left side?
