Mock Draft - 2 Live Mayhew Edition

Mock Draft - 2 Live Mayhew Edition

Sticking with a theme for Mayhew I went with another controversial group that was hotly debated for their merits during their run of hits and albums helping pave way for the Miami Bass sound that would influence hiphop tracks and an edgy style that pushed the boundaries of acceptability and CENSORSHIP.

Early career

The 2 Live Crew was created by DJ Mr. Mixx (David Hobbs) with fellow rappers Fresh Kid Ice (Chris Wong Won), and Amazing Vee (Yuri Vielot). The group released its first single, "Revelation", in 1985. "Revelation" was popular in Florida, so The 2 Live Crew (sans Amazing Vee) relocated to Miami. Rapper Brother Marquis (Mark Ross) joined The 2 Live Crew for its next single "What I Like". Local rapper Luke Skyywalker (Luther Campbell) gave The 2 Live Crew a record deal and worked as the group's manager and then lead vocalist.[7]

Move Somethin'[edit]

Move Somethin' is the second album by Miami hip hop group 2 Live Crew. The album was released in 1988. It was also certified Gold and featured the single. "ONE AND ONE"
Campbell decided to sell a separate clean version in addition to the explicit version of the next album, Move Somethin' (1988), produced by Mr. Mixx. A record store clerk in Alexander City, Alabama, was cited for selling a copy to an undercover police officer in 1988. It was the first time in the United States that a record store owner was held liable for obscenity over music. The charges were dropped after a jury found the record store not guilty.

The chicken or the egg?

which one comes first? The chicken (Oline) or the egg (RB)?

There are legitimate arguments on both sides of the aisle. A great RB will make any O line look better than it really is but at the same time a great O line will make any RB look better than he is.....

So, here we are. Are the Lions, as we know them, ready to make that leap? If you read the mock drafts that have flooded our lives, you know that the one of the two "first round RBs" will likely be available to the Lions at pick 23. The problem, there is a reason they are available.......

RBs aren't first round material anymore. Rule changes have devalued the position too much to be viable first round selections, except for those teams stuck in the stone age.

I want to believe the Lions aren't spending their time chipping rocks making crude outdated tools.....

The Truth Hurts, Lions GM edition.

Our GM took issue with being asked during his predraft presser about his inability to find offensive play makers beyond the first round. Specifically, Titus Young, Mikel Leshoure, Derrick Williams and Ryan Broyles. His response was defensive and predictable.

"Well, I would consider Joique Bell to be an offensive playmaker," he said of the Wayne State product he signed off the New Orleans Saints' practice squad. "He's a pretty good player. I think (2013 sixth-round pick) Theo Riddick's also a pretty good player for us as well. The first part of your statement, I disagree with that."
Joique wasn't drafted and Riddick hasn't done a damn thing. If we are being honest, has he drafted anyone on the offensive side that has turned into a play maker? Petigrew had a couple good seasons but beyond that? Nothing.

Finally someone in the media is ready to ask real questions of this front office instead of throwing them softballs all day long.

Lions exercise Reiff's 5th year option.

From the category of, derp why did you wait so damn long, we finally have news that the Lions have decided to do what they should have done all along. Reiff's 5th year will cost the Lions $8.07 million but if we are being honest, that should just be the starting point for a new contract for him. Reliable plus LTs don't grow on trees and the Lions need to get him locked up for a fair deal long term as soon as possible.

Chris Spielman to announce the Lions 2nd round pick

Ok, the title covers it all. Unless we trade our pick we can expect Spielman to do his thing. Does he announce our pick from a broken facemask?

This is what a real football player looks like.

NFL leaks? No way.... Lions hosting Eagles on Turkey day?

I know, I couldn't believe it either. Lions vs Eagles on T day? What is that all about? I had to look up when and or if we had ever played them on turkey day. We did! In 1968 and we lost, 12-0.

Time for revenge!!!! Carving a different bird this season on turkey day.

Lions Cut Rodney Austin!

Detroit has cut Rodney Austin after he was arrested on 4/17/15 for and is now facing charges of assault on a child under 12 years old, Assault on a female, interfering with emergency equipment and misdemeanor larceny.

Unless I am wrong, I believe Austin was the front runner to take over the LG position until someone else better was found to man the spot. That someone else is going to have to be found sooner than later now.

Damn shame.

NFL season schedule to be announced tonight

The waiting is almost over. Soon enough, we will know when and where on the schedule we will see each team that we already know we are going to play....

Whoop somebody's ass! Warford edition.

“We have to be more aggressive,” Warford said Monday after the first day of offseason workouts. “We can’t be as technical as we tried to be. The biggest thing is we tried to break everything down. We tried to focus on a bunch of stuff at once, down to the smallest detail and in offensive line play, that’s cool, but at the end of the day you have to whoop somebody’s ass.

4/20, CJ Mosley, the Lions and DOOOOOOOOOM?

Ok, today is April 20th. For those that choose to partake in the green bundle this is a quasi national holiday and the NFL for all its flaws seems to have a sense of humor. Today is also the day that drug testing for non-performance enhancing drugs starts for players around the league and on that list is Marijuana! This really does make me laugh.

What does this mean? Simple, if a player likes to smoke marijuana, he would have had to stop roughly 30 days ago to ensure that the metabolites were out of his system in time for his once a year random drug test that absolutely will happen between 4/20 and 8/9. Once that test sample is given by the player, they are free to partake until roughly 3/20 of the following year.

The quiet before the storm

I hate this time of year when it comes to the NFL. There is literally nothing happening. Every possible nit has been picked with any reasonably highly thought of draft prospect. Now we just wait. Eleven more days until the draft. Something might happen, someone might end up arrested or god forbid dead but this lull in the action is inevitable.

As bloggers what do we write about? Our love of the game and or our team?

Lions Snap Counts, Starter quality Defensive Tackle edition.

Today I would like to take a closer look at snap counts for the DT position from last year and compare it to expectations for the coming season. According to sporingcharts.com Detroit played 1,045 snaps on defense last year meaning there were roughly 2090 DT snaps last season. Suh played 852 of those snaps, fairley played 287, C.J. Mosley played 489 and Andre Fluellen played 158 snaps for a total of 1786 of 2090 snaps (85%). None of those players play for the Lions anymore but there is still time for the Lions to bring back Mosley and Fluellen. That still leaves a gaping hole in the middle of our defensive line to the tune of 1139 (55%) starter quality defensive snaps and talent lost with the departure of Suh and Fairley.

A Look at the Seven

It has been 85 years since the birth of the Detroit Lions in a tiny city of Portsmouth, Ohio.  On July 12, 1930 the Portsmouth Spartans joined the National Football League and soon after that was sold and moved to the city of Detroit to become what is now the Detroit Lions.

Lions ship George Johnson to the Bucs....

Well, that was odd. Really odd. The Lions have reportedly agreed to drop their grievance in exchange for the right to swap a late round pick with the Bucs. As a person this pleases me for George Johnson as he will get his full 3 year 9 million contract instead of the short end deal the Lions were trying to get with their complaint to the NFL front office. As a Lions fan, this leaves me distraught. This is yet another in a long line of miscalculations by the front office that has again cost us talent on a D line that is looking more and more like a shadow of it's former self. This does not bode well for 2015. Vote on our poll that follows!

The Lions biggest need in the draft?

There seems to be a consensus out there that the Lions have multiple needs at just about every position. At the top of that list it appears, to me anyhow, to be Offensive Line, Corner Back, Wide Receiver, Running Back and Defensive Tackle. I have gone over this list in my head dozens of times and I have reached a sort of priority list that I would place on these positions as follows....

The Curious Case of George

Lions Have an Issue With the Offer Sheet George Johnson Signed With Tampa Bay

Per Rotoworld:

The Lions are disputing the offer sheet DE George Johnson signed with the Buccaneers.
The deal is worth $9 million over three years. The Lions likely have a problem with the language in the deal. The contract was sent to the NFL for approval. The deadline for Detroit to match the offer sheet is technically 4pm ET today, but it sounds like the situation could drag out another day or two.

Round 3 of My Very Merry Mayhew-esque Draft

After going running back and safety in the first 2 rounds, it is finally time for Mayhew to address the interior lines.  So with the 88th pick overall the Detroit Lions select...

I knew it....

"There was not an opportunity in free agency, we didn't think, to add a player of Haloti Ngata's caliber," Lewand said. "These guys do not become available. Just like a guy like Suh doesn't come available on the market very often, neither does Haloti Ngata."

I think he meant, those guys do not become available unless they used to play for the Lions.

Disconnect between Lions front office and coaches?

When the Lions traded 4th and 5th round picks for Haloti Ngata there were a few odd quotes from Tom Lewand Via Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News. Like this quote...

The Hair Piece (aka Kiper Jr.) thinks the Lions will go OT in round 1

Protecting Stafford and giving him all the time he could possibly need to make the best throws should have been job #1 since we drafted him in 2009. That hasn't been the direction the Lions' FO has taken. Our FO seems to be content nickle and dimming our offensive line together resulting in 45 total sacks or 2.81 a game in 2014. If we do indeed draft a OT to help protect our QB, it would be a sign that the coaches and FO have little faith in Waddle or Lucas and are ready to pour more resources into keeping our QB alive.

Keeping Stafford alive is a good thing for the Lions. If Kiper Jr. is right and La'El Collins is the guy to do the job, sign me up.

Lions 2015 preseason schedule is out

Even a real Lion yawns
Two too many exhibition games but it is football we are talking about and that is better than falling asleep watching baseball. The Tigers are 3-0 by the way and their bats are on fire. Ok, back to our fake football games.

Report Suggest That the Lions Will Let George Johnson Walk

According to the Detroit Free Press, they execpt the Lions to let restricted free agent George Johnson walk after he signed a 3 year 9 million offer sheet with Tampa Bay.

My Mayhew-esque Draft

With the NFL Draft right around the corner, I thought I would do my best Martin Mayhew impersonation.  And given Martin's penance for all things shiny in the higher rounds I have selected Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon.

Worst drafting NFL team? You guessed it.

According to ESPN and Pro Football Reference's Approximate Value statistic the Lions are by far the worst drafting team since 2002.

Sharon Katz writes: "Since 2002, the Lions drafted 15 players ranked in the bottom 10% of AV added, most in the NFL, and many of those players came with a big price tag. Charles Rogers (No. 2 overall) and Mike Williams (No. 10 overall) are the most notable busts; they cost the Lions more than $25 million despite neither making it through their rookie contracts with the team.

Levy and the Lions Have Not Started Contract Talks

The Beard!!!

Kyle Meinke of MLive is reporting that the Detroit Lions have not opened up contract talks with DeAndre Levy.

Levy is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2015 season.  Levy was originally a third round pick of the Lions back in 2009 and has been a regular starter since his rookie season.

What the Loss of George Johnson Could Mean to the Lions Defensive Line

On Tuesday, the Tampa Buccaneers signed DE George Johnson to a three year offer sheet.  The Lions have five days to match the Bucs offer.  If the Lions do not sign the offer, what will be the effects to the defensive line be?

A Smart Lions FO? (yes, I know)

Many of us have been waiting for the Lions to extend Levy's contract. I have been one of the more vocal players in the get er done category but there might just be some wisdom in waiting. We lost a top three DT in Suh along with a top 10 DT in Fairley this past season and replaced them with a top 10 DT who just happens to be on the down side of his career and a guy that has started ONE (seriously, I am not kidding here) game in is career. There is a very good chance that our entire defense will suffer this coming season and as a result the guys that surround them will be valued less as a result.

Lions fans, finding good in a pile of shit.

Lombardi wants you to believe the O line is to blame!

Here we go PODers.....

"I think the offensive line, the injuries that we had to deal with there, was as big a factor as anything," Lombardi said last week at the Lions' town hall meeting for season-ticket holders. "I think that if we can just stay healthy, but also just the players having one more year to get familiar with it, is going to help more than anything."

Sorry Joe, we fans aren't that stupid. When you ask a player to do something they are incapable of doing, bad things happen. It takes a special sort of coach to believe that forcing players to do things they aren't capable of doing is the players fault.

Pride O Detroit

A new beginning!!!

Digs is apparently digging his own grave.

James Ihedigbo's agent let the Lions know today that he will not be attending the Lions off season voluntary workouts because he wants a new contract. Apparently he wants a new deal because Isa Abdul-Quddus is making more than him this year and he finds that somehow wrong. His agent believes he outplayed his contract last year and he wants a new deal to match his production. Frankly, this is a smart move by James and his agent. When the Lions let Suh leave for nothing in return the defense took a HUGE hit.Now is the time for player to cash in on last seasons distorted performance before this coming season's reality drops a bomb on all of us.......

Good luck with that old man.

Updated with comments from James agent.

Mayillen strikes again. George Johnson signs tender with bucs

That is right fellow Lions fans. Instead of spending roughly 800k more and offering George "six sacks" Johnson a 2nd round tender our GM decided to use the original round tender. Now the Lions have 5 days to match the offer made by the Bucks or move on from him and let even more skill evaporate for absolutely nothing in return from the strongest unit we had last season.
