The Player or the Value, Which Comes First?

Larry Warford 3rd Round Pick in 2013

So I was reading some tweets from the Lions OTAs and Ebron's continued issues with drop passes, and started to think again about my objection of that draft pick.  My objection really is not with Eric himself but where the Lions drafted him and that got me thinking about whether or not where a player is taken changes our feeling towards that player?

Gym Shortz has a new job

No, I am not talking about taking an old cruddy pair of gym shorts and re-purposing them to soak up oil spills in your man cave garage. Instead, I am talking about taking a cruddy NFL coach and appointing him as a consultant to NFL officiating.

Stop laughing. Seriously, the NFL really did it.

The same guy that screamed "Learn the fucking rules" across the field at an opposing coach only to fail to know the same rule about a year later is now a "from the coaches perspective" consultant to NFL officials.

Ok, I am laughing too.

Only in the NFL.

Diggs is back

James Ihedigbo has reportedly decided to end his hold out and join the Lions for their OTAs which started today. This is good for both him and the Lions. He had zero leverage as a 31 year old player on a one year deal and the Lions, frankly, need his leadership on the field. One has to wonder if he heard younger footsteps coming up from behind him?

Welcome back Diggs.

Lions OTA coming fast..

Detroit will be holding their OTAs on Tuesday May 26th through Thursday May 28th. By rule, these practices are non-padded and non-hitting with coach instruction. In the past teams have often been caught pushing their players too far during these practices and were subsequently punished with a limitation of future practices but I honestly don't see that happening here in Detroit. Papa Jim just doesn't strike me as the type that would allow something like that under his watchful eye.

So, during the middle of our coming week, what do you think is the most important thing we might hear coming from the press coming our Lions' OTA?

For me, it is all about health. No Wammies, No Whammies, NO WHAMMIES!!!!!!

Just don't get hurt guys!

Player Watch: Ezekiel "Ziggy" Ansah

A 5th overall pick in 2013, the Lions will need their young defensive end to take that next step forward this upcoming season.

Puzzle me this....

Can a secondary make a defensive line better?

For several years our Lions front office has been selling us fans that a dominate defensive line can make a secondary better. One could make a case that they were right. Detroit ended up 8th and 11th in DVAO according to football outsiders against the pass and run respectively last season. Considering all the injuries we suffered, that is one fine season of defense from our boys.

Ok, NFL. You got this wrong.

The NFL decided today to move the extra point back to the 15 yard line with the option of going for two from the two yard line. This is the ultimate "conservative" choice. Instead of actually making the 2 point attempt more tempting by moving it up to the 1 they decided to force teams to show their hand before the play is even snapped. Gone are the days of lining up for the Extra point and faking it. You either kick the Extra point or you go for two. There will be no deception. None. How does this make extra points more exciting?

This is exactly the opposite of what the NFL really wanted. A 33 yard extra point is NOT going to make teams try for two more often and the lack of possible deception will make those attempt even less likely. Add to that, a 33 yard Extra point is maybe 5% less likely. This is NOT going to change anything. If anything, it is going to make the extra point more predictable because teams can't fake it anymore.

Massive failure here. Flat out stupid. If you are going to change the extra point attempt, this was the least likely way to make it more interesting.

I am sorry guys

I have not be active lately. A few days ago I was informed that an incredibly close childhood friend of mine was found dead. Apparently the victim of murder. I know he wasn't the same little boy that I remember, as he was about 10 years younger than I was and it has been 25 plus years since I have seen him, but his death has enveloped me for a while now. He had his issues, as an adult, but I will always remember him as the chubby kid that ran around our backyard with reckless abandon. I will always remember that pure smile and I know he is in a better place now. Rest in peace young brother, you didn't deserve this end.

Thinking of our Lions and such just seems so petty to me right now. I will find my center soon and I will return. Until then, be well brothers.

Lions sign CB Josh Wilson

Detroit added 30 year old Veteran CB Josh Wilson to their roster on a one year deal worth 950,000. At 5'9" Wilson will be competing for the slot CB role but he has played RCB for Seattle, Baltimore and Washington in the past. In 8 Seasons, he has 15 Interceptions and 78 passes defended.

I am not sure how I feel about this pickup. We have young guys we need to have them playing, learning and succeeding or failing. Does bringing in a Vet player like this push one or more of those guys out?

Lions sign Corey Wootton

Corey Wootton as a member of the Minnesota Vikings
Lions officially sign DE/DT Corey Wootten today.  By releasing Skye Dawson yesterday, the Lions had a roster spot open and decided to give it to Wootton.

Undrafted Stud or Dud? Meet Zach Zenner.

At 5'11" and 223lbs this kid ran for 3 consecutive 2000 yard seasons at South Dakota State. Yes it was mostly against lesser competition but against that competition, he dominated and against the four FBS schools he faced he was still highly productive with almost 500 yards. He ran a 4.6 40 with a 41 inch vertical. As a one cut and run, down hill runner he might just find a place on the team. George Winn be aware.

So, Stud or Dud? Vote and or leave your comment below.

Rookie camp, day one in the books and no Injuries!!!

You will never live this down Tully!
There really is only one thing a fan of a team can take away from rookie mini-camp. Did our new guys survive today without any significant injuries? So far we can say yes to that question unlike the Jags and their newest pass rushing 1st round #3 overall pick Fowler. Just an awful way to start a career in the NFL. Best wishes to that young man and to our young men. Stay healthy, we will need you to be monsters when the season arrives!

No whammies, No Whammies, No Whammies, Go Lions!

Random Draft Musings

I like taking a guard and trading back
I like the positions addressed through the draft in relation to the team. If the players don't pan out, it's not so much that I'd have had a better suggestion. That being said, I didn't like the trading away of picks to make moves. Not that I'll always be against that, but I don't think this was the year to do it. Too many questions that could need answering, and probably will be answered this year... so having those picks next year, and offering flexibility to go after the final piece, or add to the Super Bowl winning roster an elite type piece because you have so much ammo to move up from 32.

Put that foot out there.....

The draft is in, the off season is basically done. There might be some minor moves here and there but we are where we are as a football team. The time is now, proclaim your faith brothers. How many wins will the lions have in the coming season?

Give us your grade for the Lions draft.

Now that the draft is done and we have all had a little time to marinate on the results, give us your grade on the draft and post a comment below with your thoughts if you are so inclined.

Open thread: Fight night Baby!!! Go Pacquaio

Enough said, pummel that woman beater.

Lions 101: Selling out the future for today to cover yesterday's mistakes!

Trading next years 3rd round pick for this years 4th round pick is the kind of thing desperate GMs do to fix their past mistakes today instead of just dealing with the problem. We essentially got a 4th round talent with a 3rd round pick. This is how to NOT draft.

I love my Lions but damn man. We have an idiot running our team.

Lions trade up in the 3rd round and select Alex Carter

Lions select Ameer Abdullah with their second round pick

Detroit Lions Select Duke Guard Laken Tomlinson

One thing we as Lion fans know for sure, is that we truly do not know for sure what to expect from a Mayhew draft. And last night was no different.

The Lions trade down five spots with Denver to draft Duke University guard Laken Tomlinson.  What the Lions got for their 23rd overall pick was a former player Manny Ramirez and a pair of 5th round picks, one in this draft and one in next season's draft.
