Are the Lions Making a Mistake by not Signing Levy Now?

DeAndre Levy was a 3rd round draft pick in 2009 and has quickly became a fan favorite.

With a beard that would rival Chuck Norris' beard, Levy has built up a nice little cult following among Lions fans.  Whether it is his outstanding play on the field or his adventurous offseason lifestyle, Lions fans cannot not get enough of this guy that is set to be a free agent come next season.  So why hasn't the front office has not signed this man?

Tim Twentyman reported back in late April that the Lions have reached out to Levy's agent about a contract extension. It has been more than a month later and all is quiet on the re-signing front.  Are the Lions making a mistake by dragging this out?  If nothing gets done by the start of the season, what are the chances of Levy re-signing before the free agency period next season?

  1. I may be a little over concerned about this, but given the Suh fiasco being told over and over again a signing was coming, i would like to see a deal done by the start of the season.

    1. given all that happened with Suh. All that was stated and never actually happened, I think it is very reasonable to doubt this front office when it comes to player contracts. These jack-a-ninnies couldn't tie their own shoes without assistance.

    2. there will be 31 players who's contracts expire next season. I know a lot of fans are touting how the Lions cap will be in good shape next season, but there are a lot of players starters and depth to get signed.

    3. This roster just isn't built for long term success. It is turning over too much too often while letting too much talent leave. 31 players contracts expiring next year? That is insane. A game day roster consists of 43 players. That is 72% of a game day roster.

We need to draft much much better and keep our own much much better if we are ever going to do anything of significance.

    4. that sounds like 2012… and I think players pressing led to some of those big costly errors and mistakes to go along with schwartz overly emotional leadership…. was a bad fit.

Is that contract situation common in the nfl though?

    5. Granted a lot of those players are just roster podder and don't really figure in for the game day rosters, but there are several guys getting a good sized raise next season. Like Reiff is getting a 6 mil bump Quin is getting and extra 5 mil. so that money will add up quickly.

  2. Do you think he has any desire to go back to Wisconsin?

    1. Levy is a hard person to figure out. He seems to be a free spirit that rarely makes any sort of comments. To be honest I never thought about him wanting to play in GB, but it very possible. Levy has the feel of a player that could retire at an early age and would like to end up playing for his hometown team.

    2. With my Suh jersey going into storage, I need to buy another jersey so I wish Levy would sign already so I could get his. Otherwise it's a Warford or Ziggy jersey.

    3. My last jersey I bought was Stafford's in 2010. You are usually safe going with o-linemen as a jersey. I've had my Backus jersey for 10 years before he retired. Looking to go with a Reiff or a Von Noy but will wait until this season plays out, contract wise for Reiff and play wise for Von Noy.

Warford is a safe bet that he will be here for awhile.

    4. Yeah I'm thinking Warford but watch, as soon as I buy #75 he'll change to #67 that he wore at Kentucky, just watch!

    5. An elite athlete in the prime of his life. Where would you want to play? A team that has one playoff win in several decades or a team that has several super bowls in the same time?

  3. No worries at all. Lions have the funds in 2016 to pay anyone anything.

    1. not really, 31 players sent to be free agents. And in the end it might not be about money but where he wants to play

    2. yea that money will go fast, especially if they make a play for another big free agent signing… which is something they've done most years, even if they get the FA's at a decent value.

  4. It seems like locking him up early would've been more of a sure thing, and they may have tried but been denied. Levy looked great, but had Suh… maybe Lions FO wants to wait and see what his play is like without Suh's dominance up front?

    avril, suh, …. levy?

maybe they should be working on extending Ziggy now before he shows anything more.
