Disconnect between Lions front office and coaches?

When the Lions traded 4th and 5th round picks for Haloti Ngata there were a few odd quotes from Tom Lewand Via Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News. Like this quote...

"We literally finalized the trade with Baltimore; Martin Mayhew and I are on the phone in my office," Lewand said. "We hadn't even told Jim yet, and we're on the phone to (vice chairman) Bill Ford Jr., letting him know that the trade was finalized. And it pops up on Twitter as we're telling the owner we had just finalized it. We hadn't even told the head coach yet."
How does a Front office trade the middle of their draft for any player without first at least touching bases with their head coach? Shouldn't the two groups be in concert with one another? Shouldn't the coach be in the room? Taking unilateral actions without even consulting the guys that have to coach the players you acquire gives me a clear impression that the two groups aren't working with one another.

  1. Reading some of Lewand's quotes from the Lions Town Hall meeting is that is started with Sheldon White's evaluation of Ngata. Given some of the other rosters moves this offseason one can see that Mayhew and the front office could be making roster moves without the coaching staffs input.

    1. And that is really disturbing to me. That two groups need to be 100% in concert with one another to even stand a chance of being successful.
