Lions exercise Reiff's 5th year option.

From the category of, derp why did you wait so damn long, we finally have news that the Lions have decided to do what they should have done all along. Reiff's 5th year will cost the Lions $8.07 million but if we are being honest, that should just be the starting point for a new contract for him. Reliable plus LTs don't grow on trees and the Lions need to get him locked up for a fair deal long term as soon as possible.

Something I don't get. Why would the Lions wait this long to apply the option, under the premise that the draft might change things for Reiff's roll on the lions, and now decide to pick up that option so close to the draft? The Lions could have had the entire draft done and still had time to pick up his option.

  1. I am glad that they are. My guess is that they were really looking into drafting a LT or bringing one in to move Reiff to RT and the possibility of trying to sign him for less money next season.

  2. No question, they are looking for that option. I think it is foolish, fucking with your starting LT that has proven to be at the very least, above average and durable; seems like a bad idea too me.

And frankly, LT or RT means nothing to the option year. When he gets a new deal (he better) that 8 million will be part of his guaranteed money on that new deal. That is the starting point at both positions.
