Give us your grade for the Lions draft.

Now that the draft is done and we have all had a little time to marinate on the results, give us your grade on the draft and post a comment below with your thoughts if you are so inclined.

  1. I voted C. This draft felt, to me, like reaches and poor decisions that resulted in us getting some good players at needed positions. For instance, I like Laken but I believe he or someone very comparable would have been there in the 2nd which would have freed us up to draft Brown late in the first, thus saving us next year's 3rd round pick.

    1. i really didn't like trading away next year's third rounder. with as many picks that were lining up for the Lions for next year, I liked the idea of having that much ammo to replenish the roster , or if the team is proven to be close through another year of contending , going for the big finishing touches.

I liked two olineman though, and some other things about the draft but if history shows, even in a good draft, the Lions should expect some of these players won't fulfill their roles. If that does end up being Laken, I'll be bummed they didn't double down with another young guard with upside.
I could swear I am reading the same comments and scouting report on the smaller DB as we read on last year's smaller db.

  2. Through out the scouting process, teams target players who they want to be on their team... then they create their personal 'big board'... and then develop scenarios/plans to get those players. This draft seemed well orchestrated and executed to get the players the Lions wanted.

Because of that.... I gave it a B. I'm not a fan of 'filling holes'... however, Mayhew might have hit a home run. I like the first 4 rounds of players... I like the fact they traded back into the 4th round to get a DT. I like the move up to get the CB/S. The moves seemed calculated and deliberate.... I like the FO having Confidence.

The 4th round: Here are the 2 main reasons I like it....
    1. 2016 Compensatory picks make the 3rd rounder expendable.
    2. Walker and Ngata are only on a one year deal. Smarter to use THIS draft to break in a new DT than next season, when you are unsure of the veteran leadership.

Draft picks to me are about finding/getting the right guy at the right time. Moving picks from one year to another to make it happen is part of the game.

    1. I do not agree with like the idea that a late 3rd round pick, might as well call it a 4th round, compensatory pick next year somehow makes losing value by trading away a higher pick next year for a lower pick this year ok.

That said, your point about Walker and Ngata being on one year deals and getting someone to groom under Ngata for a year does have validity to it.

  3. you're like a whole new guy over here!
IMO you make compelling points to like the Lions draft, now it's also a matter of it you believe that the FO made the right choices.

    1. He does make some good points. this draft really felt like a mixed bag to me. I didn't like the really method but I do like the players. Does that make sense? That is why I gave it a C.

    2. i keep thinking… this is the draft I've kind of wanted for the last few years. take lineman high, maybe more than one… kind of a meat and potatoes type draft but I'd still have preferred more picks or not trading those picks away and taking the same positions. Had they taken Bennett and not Gabe, at this point, I'd not have know much of the difference and could have felt bolstered by the fact Bennett "fell" so then it does become about will Gabe live up to what the Lions traded away to get him… two picks for one player, the level up traded pick for the next year that in the worst case scenario is towards the top of the third round or what some might call a really late second
because I have questions about the team going forward that I see getting answered next year or better defined, I think it would have been easier to trade away picks next year if the team was on top of the mountain rather than do it now….
so if this was the 2011 draft, i might've loved it.. right now I'm kind of trying to still figure it out

    3. meat and potatoes draft. I like that. I remember a certain GM that did this same kind of draft in his last year running the team too.

    4. that actually doesn't look like a bad draft, huh? some judge by home many guys stay in the league and that list has more than a few… 5 or 6 guys … maybe he was finally on the upswing and just needed another season or two

    5. No, that was one of his best and it was his last too. The parallels between him and his prodigy are haunting me.

  4. I gave it a C+. I'm not sure how Alex Carter fits in. Just two interceptions at Stanford kind of worries me, think he might be to conservative and I hate that in a CB. FS maybe? Again lack of interceptions. He is a great tackler but to small for SS. Nickel? I like Diggs there. I'm just not sure on Carter.

    1. This year is going to be a huge test for Austin. We lost a ton of talent on the D line. If he is the genius we hope he truly is, he will find a way to make it work and that likely includes Carter in the mix, what with our lack of depth in the secondary.

    2. Lack of depth in the secondary? explain.

    3. One of our outside starting CBs is 35 years old with nothing behind him. We have depth at the slot CB position but none of them have been able to stay healthy. We all hope that will change. Our newest CB addition this year should not be put into a position to be relied upon. He needs NFL level seasoning.

We got by last year with this same depth so I hope we can do it again but this is a violent sport. Injuries happen, far more than anyone would want.

  5. C

Seems like the right positions were drafted just not the players. Could have gone Malcom Brown in the first and Coleman in the second and than try to trade up and get AJ Cann in the third.

    1. I wanted Brown in the first too.

    2. I'll take 2 starting OG's with the 28th pick over Brown 10 out of 10 times.

The Lions DLine is not the problem, it's the gaping hole at LG and the OG backup position. I like Abdullah a lot better than Coleman. His vision is better, his 3 cone, 20yd shuttle, broad jump, vert.... Ameer is the more explosive runner. Furthermore, Coleman had more fumbles than Ameer last season.

2 starting caliber OGs and a solid RB in the first 2 rounds.... I love it.
