Lions sign CB Josh Wilson

Detroit added 30 year old Veteran CB Josh Wilson to their roster on a one year deal worth 950,000. At 5'9" Wilson will be competing for the slot CB role but he has played RCB for Seattle, Baltimore and Washington in the past. In 8 Seasons, he has 15 Interceptions and 78 passes defended.

I am not sure how I feel about this pickup. We have young guys we need to have them playing, learning and succeeding or failing. Does bringing in a Vet player like this push one or more of those guys out?

  1. Veteran signings do a few things... it sets the bar for the positions, it improves training camp/OTAs drill efficiency, and it allows the FO/Coaches to create a list of Vets/FAs for mid season signings due to injuries.

IMHO, a fan should never be 'worried' that a Vet will take a rookie's 'spot'.... if anything, Wilson was signed to push and evaluate Bentley and Lawson... 2 picks that have been thru some crappy injuries. (bentley more than Lawson)

I say the more vets the better in camp, the better. Wilson is a good plug and play CB and is a welcome signing. Plus, Austin (unlike Schwartz) has shown that he consistently gets younger guys on the field.

  2. I am okay with the signing, Wilson was pretty solid in Seattle but has not been able to back to that form.

I think this signing says is that the coaching staff is unsure about the health of Lawson and Bentley.

  3. I'm not looking for anything from Lawson this year, and Bentley is one injury away from being released.

  4. by idea, I have the same question… will it bump a young guy from the roster… but as it stands, if the coaches in charge feel like the young guys won't offer as much as Josh, then it;ll look like a good signing. If the coaches decide that and Josh plays like crap, then that'll be unfortunate
