Ok, NFL. You got this wrong.

The NFL decided today to move the extra point back to the 15 yard line with the option of going for two from the two yard line. This is the ultimate "conservative" choice. Instead of actually making the 2 point attempt more tempting by moving it up to the 1 they decided to force teams to show their hand before the play is even snapped. Gone are the days of lining up for the Extra point and faking it. You either kick the Extra point or you go for two. There will be no deception. None. How does this make extra points more exciting?

This is exactly the opposite of what the NFL really wanted. A 33 yard extra point is NOT going to make teams try for two more often and the lack of possible deception will make those attempt even less likely. Add to that, a 33 yard Extra point is maybe 5% less likely. This is NOT going to change anything. If anything, it is going to make the extra point more predictable because teams can't fake it anymore.

Massive failure here. Flat out stupid. If you are going to change the extra point attempt, this was the least likely way to make it more interesting.

  1. Percentage wise.... they would have to move the Extra point back to the 50 to get even close between 50/50 to the 2pt conversion.

Oh well, at least they will allow the defense to score the 2pts.... though does that count on blocked extra points? I did not confirm that.

  2. i actually didn't like reading a headline suggesting Prater didn't like the change, unless it was more or less for there reasoning you are mentioning… that it effectively changes little in terms of the game, and the scores.

I'm not sure I ever saw a fake extra point though

  3. It's going to lead to players that are 2 point specialist like Refrigerator Perry and Joe Fauria.
