Worst drafting NFL team? You guessed it.

According to ESPN and Pro Football Reference's Approximate Value statistic the Lions are by far the worst drafting team since 2002.

Sharon Katz writes: "Since 2002, the Lions drafted 15 players ranked in the bottom 10% of AV added, most in the NFL, and many of those players came with a big price tag. Charles Rogers (No. 2 overall) and Mike Williams (No. 10 overall) are the most notable busts; they cost the Lions more than $25 million despite neither making it through their rookie contracts with the team.

"Admittedly, the Lions hit on a few first-round picks like Ndamukong Suh and Calvin Johnson, but as top-2 picks, they were expected to perform well. What really hurt the Lions in the rankings is their inability to find value later in the draft. The Lions ranked last in terms of value added in rounds four through seven."

That last line doesn't exactly inspire does it? We don't have a 4th or 5th this year so the odds of us finding mid to late round value is basically gone. But we have an aging ex-pro bowl DT to show for it.

During this period the Loins average draft score was negative 6.2. The only team in the NFL with a negative number. Even the crypt keepers raiders had a 2.

Around Half of those years our GM was the worst GM in NFL history so we should expect to look bad on a list like this but being ranked worst and by a large margin?! I am thinking the GM nut didn't fall far from the GM tree.

  2. clearly this is rigged, and the results don't mean a thing.
with the roster in a shambles after Millen, there was no choice for Mayhew but to draft for BPA
… and when you do that with little regard for need, or worried about off field flags, you get the talented guys.
Even with Millen, is it his fault Charles Rogers smoked weed and broke his collarbone? He was talented.
Same for Mayhew, Titus was clearly a talented player, and the BPA by all measures both real and imagined made him a good pick there. You can't protect for injury or going plum cra cra
and when they say can't find value, we can easily point to Sammie Lee Hill and Willie Young, and even Jason Fox just signed a new contract. Bottom in drafting? that includes Millens time so of course it's going to look worse than it is. SMH , the liberal conservative media with their obvious anti-ford agenda are always trying to take Mayhew down for nothing.
