Taylor Decker OT from Ohio State (he is a Lions now, so we can forgive him, I guess)

That is our pick. We took the third best OT when we could have had the best Center. We needed help at RT, no question. I am not happy, I am not mad.

  1. Kelly goes 2 picks later lol. But Ryan Grisgson is the biggest idiot since Matt Millen...so maybe I can live without him haha. I like Taylor Decker, liked him a lot more than Jack Conklin when I watched tape of both and honestly I trust him a lot more than Stanley or Tunsil. This isn't me trying to inflate the guy because he's ours now. I have some very real concerns about tackles in college today. I believe the spread out, screen/seam heavy offenses that are played in today's game are hurting tackles just as much as they're hurting QBs. Decker & Conklin come from pro schemes, I simply like Decker better on tape. Would've preferred Kelly, but I get it & I'm certainly not upset about investing high in offensive line.

    1. I hope the reports of his marginal pass blocking skills are overblown. I like, seemingly universally agreed among the pundits, that he has a nasty streak. The Lions O line needs a lot more nasty and that is probably an understatement.

LT or RT, if he has a long productive career, this will be a good pick. I am not of the belief that LT is more important that RT anymore. Teams rarely keep their best pass rushers in one place anymore. They move them around trying to create match up advantage and if your RT is considerably weaker than your LT, they will move their stud over there and do their best to take advantage of it.

I am still not too happy we took the 3rd or 4th best Tackle instead of the best Center. This has the feel of a pick heavy on need instead of picking the best player available in an area of need. I mean, is it just me or does the best Center almost always go first? It sure seems like it.

    2. exactly my point on the schemes - if these guys are being trained for the pro game, shouldnt they get more info on the pro game... more practice in the way the pros play?

and if it is just for extra carriculars at the school, shouldnt there be a minor league trade school that is teaching these guys what they'll need in the NFL? if they have the measurables... the rest should be learnable with a high level of success.

    3. i can see about the center as a need but we dont know exactly how they feel on Swanson. This could be a vote of confidence in Swanson's progress and for that we have to wait and see. If Swanson is good enough, that would make RT still a big need while one good enough center becomes basically useless to the team unless there's injuries.

not that I am sold on swanson, but I cant get upset when they draft lineman in the first round. I dont scout so the 3rd or 4th best tackle could be the 1st best tackle as far as I know
